Tema, Oct. 8, GNA- The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development will soon introduce tractor-mounted trailers for collection of refuse, Mr Kwadwo Adjei-Darko, the sector Minister announced on Wednesday.
He said the Ministry has placed an order for 150 tractors for the project.
The Minister was receiving 29 open solid waste containers being the last consignment of 194 empties manufactured by the Gratis Foundation at a cost of 5.95 billion cedis at Tema.
He said the containers will be distributed to the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies.
Mr Adjei-Darko said the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning released 14.5 billion cedis in February this year as a short-term intervention to reduce sanitation related problems.
Dr Kwabena Dankyi Darfoor, Executive Director of the GRATIS Foundation, said the containers are one of the technology development and transfer programme for keeping proper sanitation.
He said the Foundation has manufactured solid waste containers and garbage push trucks to improve sanitation, and is considering the manufacture of containers that can be mounted on trailers and pulled by tractors.
He called on the district assemblies to contact GRATIS offices in the regions and districts for technical assistance in the maintenance of the containers.
