Trader bites taskforce official during Kasoa decongestion exercise

A trader in Kasoa has allegedly bitten a member of the Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly taskforce during a pavement decongestion exercise, leading to court summon.

The incident occurred during an ongoing operation by the Assembly to remove traders and unauthorised structures from pavements in the Kasoa Central Business District.

In a video shared by News Center on TikTok and sighted by GhanaWeb Business, the confrontation began when taskforce officials asked the trader to vacate the pavement.

The situation reportedly escalated into a physical altercation, during which the trader allegedly bit one of the officials.

The officer sustained injuries, though details about the extent and whether medical treatment was provided remain unclear.

“The taskforce was here and you bite him for doing his work. What kind of behaviour is this?” Municipal Chief Executive Officer Seth Banini said while confronting the trader.

The trader is expected to appear before court, although the Assembly has not confirmed the specific charges or the date of her appearance.

This incident adds to growing tensions between traders and the Assembly’s taskforce during decongestion exercises.

In May, four people including three taskforce members were injured after traders reportedly threw stones at officials during a similar operation at the Kasoa‑Bawjiase junction, which also disrupted traffic.

The Assembly maintains that the decongestion exercises are necessary to clear pedestrian walkways, reduce congestion, and improve movement within the municipality.

However, traders have expressed concerns about the impact on their livelihoods, calling for designated trading spaces.

The Assembly has previously indicated plans to identify permanent sites for affected traders.
