Trader gets 26 years for robbery

An Accra Circuit Court on Friday handed a 26-year jail term to one Michael Appiah Mends, a trader for robbery.

Michael robbed the complainant name witheld of one Toshiba Laptop worth GH¢1,600, one HTC Desire 816 phone worth GH¢950.00, one Nokia Mobile phone, worth GH¢ 95.00 and an amount of GH¢ 800.00.

He pleaded guilty to the charge and was convicted on his plea by the court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh.

The Prosecutor, Police Chief Inspector, Kwabena Adu told the court that the complainant, is a banker residing at Nungua Addogonno, while the convict is a trader and resides at Kokrobite.

He said on February 4, at about 0200 hours, Michael, together with two others namely Benjamin Akwei an ex-convict, and Anago Macho now at large armed with a machete, a pair of scissors, a cutter, a torch light and a screw driver entered the bedroom of the complainant and robbed her of the above listed items.

Police Chief Inspector, Adu said after the robbery, the convict and his accomplices took turns to have sexual intercourse with the complainant.

He told the court that on March 29, the ex-convict Benjamin who fits the description given to the police by the complainant was arrested. On April 4, he confessed committing the offence and mentioned Michael and the said Anago as his accomplices.

The prosecution said, on May 2, at about 1100 hours, upon a tip off, Michael was arrested at his hide out at Kokrobite.

When cautioned he also admitted the offence and led police to the house of the complainant and demonstrated how he together with his accomplices gained access into the complainants bedroom to carry out the act.
