The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in collaboration with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has extended its tax compliance education to business people in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region.

The two institutions conducted the education and sensitization programmes on tax compliance in some areas in the District including the Central Market, Churches, mechanic, hairdressers, and dressmakers among others.

It forms part of a nationwide campaign on tax compliance on the theme: “Our Tax Our Future”.

Speaking to the business people in Bongo on Wednesday, Ms Alice Ndego, the Bongo District Director of NCCE, explained that government depended on taxes to undertake development projects, hence the need to honour their tax obligations.

She urged them to pay their taxes to enable government finance its budget and bring development projects to the communities.

The District Director said tax compliance was a constitutional demand and those who failed to honour their tax duties would be punished as stipulated by the law.

The business people, at the various tax education programmes, applauded the campaign and pledged to honestly declare their income and pay their taxes accordingly.

They, however, indicated that the long distance between the District and Bolgatanga, the Upper East Regional capital where they were supposed to pay the taxes was a barrier and they would not be able to travel frequently to honour their tax obligation.

They, therefore, urged the GRA to periodically visit the District and also make moves to establish offices in the District to carry out the tax collection duties.
