Traditional ruler called for discipline in chieftaincy institution

Koforidua, Jan. 3, GNA - The World Bank had initiated a project to enhance the adjudicating capacity of traditional rulers in the country, especially the alternate conflict resolution practices in the country. To this end, the pilot project for the programme was to be implemented in the New Juaben Traditional and the Ho-Asogli Traditional Areas this year.

The Omanhene of the New Juaben Traditional Area, Daasebre (Professor Emeritus) Oti Boateng, announced this at an end-of year reception he held for the chiefs and Queenmothers in the traditional area at Koforidua on Monday in appreciation of their contribution towards the development of the area during the past year.

He called for discipline within the chieftaincy institution if it was to play its expected role in modern society, noting that some chiefs had been contributing to the growing indiscipline in the society by their inability to stand up for justice and fairness to check the misconduct by some people under them. According to him, the chieftaincy institution needed to be developmentally oriented if it was to gain its relevance in modern system of governance.

Daasebre Oti Boateng said it was based on such vision that the New Juaben Development Board, made up of experienced eminent citizens from the traditional area, was launched during the celebration of the New Juaben Akwantukese Festival last year to enhance the development of the area.

He observed that many of the current crop of chiefs were well-educated personalities with a lot of experience which could be tapped for national development and local government administration in the country.

Dasebere Oti Boateng called for unity and peace in the country to enable the country to develop and effectively compete among the international community of nations.

He paid special tribute to the Dumakwahene of the the area, Nana Okuyaw Akyeampong for dedicated service to the Yiadom Hwedie Stool for 58 years.
