The accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, April 2, 2026, and caused significant disruption as the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service diverted traffic from both the Apedwa and Asiakwa sections of the highway, according to a report by citinewsroom.com.

Police say the injured have been rushed to nearby health facilities, where they are receiving treatment.
“The accident has triggered a major gridlock, leaving travellers stranded for hours, particularly as many journey across the country ahead of the Easter festivities.
“Authorities have advised drivers travelling from Accra to Kumasi to reroute through Kyebi from the Apedwa stretch, while those heading from Kumasi are being diverted through Asiakwa to rejoin the main road at Apedwa,” it stated.
Meanwhile, the police is collaborating with other agencies to tow the accident vehicles, which have blocked the road at the crash scene.
It has therefore urged drivers travelling from Accra to Kumasi to take the Kyebi route from the Apedwa stretch.
Those heading from Kumasi have been diverted through Asiakwa to rejoin the main road at Apedwa.
