Transport fares go up

Accra, Aug. 1, GNA - The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) on Tuesday announced new transport fares with immediate effect. A statement co-signed by Mr Kojo Adom Moses and Mr Stephen Okudzeto, Chairman and Member of the Council respectively said the decision was taken after deliberations on the existing fares and tariffs and rising operational cost. The Council directed its members to provide the fare adjustments list at the various loading stations for the public. The new transport fares covered intra-city tro-tro and inter-city long distance and taxicabs and "Peugeot" or Caravan.

The Council directed its members to provide the fare adjustments list at the various loading stations for the public. The new transport fares covered intra-city tro-tro and inter-city long distance and taxicabs and "Peugeot" or Caravan. According to the statement a fare of 1,000 cedis (10GP) for intra-city or tro-tro becomes 1,200 cedis (12GP), 2,500 cedis (25GP) to 2,900 cedis (29GP) and 3,000 cedis (30 GP) becomes 3,400 cedis (34 GP). The GRTCC said that the fares for taxi cabs and Peugeot or Caravan would be, one kilometre or part thereof to two point five or part thereof from 3,000 cedis (30 GP) to 3,500 cedis (35 GP), from 5.6 kilometres to 6.5 kilometres or part thereof, 5,000 cedis (50 GP) to 5,500 cedis (55 GP) and from 10.6 kilometres to 11.5 kilometres or part thereof 7,500 cedis (75 GP) to 8,000 cedis (80 GP). It said that for long distance, a fare of 8,000 cedis (80 GP) would become 9,200 cedis (92 GP), 10,000 cedis or one Ghana Cedi - 11,500 cedis or one Ghana cedi 15 GP and 20,000 cedis or two Ghana cedis to 23,000 cedis or two Ghana cedis 30 GP.
