The Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bernard Allotey-Jacobs has called on the President to tread cautiously in dealing with the alleged corruption allegations at the Electoral Commission (EC).

Tensions at the EC were dragged into the public domain after some employees of Commission petitioned President Nana Akufo-Addo to remove Charlotte Osei from office for alleged financial malfeasance.

Mrs. Osei rubbished the allegations and fired some of her own, accusing her deputies of various forms of malfeasance.

Mrs. Osei also said she would order investigations into the conduct of Amadu Sulley and other Commissioners believed to be engaged in malpractices.

Several commentators have called for the impeachment of the Chairperson of the Commission with some suggesting that the EC Boss and her two deputy commissioners must all be impeached.

Allotey-Jacobs speaking on Adom FM’s Morning Show, ‘Dwaso Nsem’ Tuesday however counselled the President to tread cautiously in dealing with the EC saga as according to him the saga has the tendency of making and unmaking him as a President.

“The Electoral Commission saga is a bomb that has been packaged and presented to Nana Akufo-Addo… the saga is a bomb packaged and brought to your doorstep, if you don’t take care and it triggers, thousands of people would be dead on the streets of Ghana…,” he warned.

He further called on the President to be careful and not heed to just ‘any advice’ offered him as the issue at hand is a sensitive one.

The NDC chair further suggested that the President must set up a Presidential Commission to rather investigate the saga and come out with recommendations which would be acted upon by a bi-partisan commission from Parliament.

“I will advise the President to allow the EC to use their internal regulations to deal with it…the President must set up a Presidential Commission which should be made up of credible groups such as CODEO, IDEG, representatives from Political Parties and other imminent persons to investigate…,” he advised.
