Treat workers better - ICU

The Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) has renewed its call for better pay and working conditions for workers, especially casual employees in the country.

According to the union, it is important the nation works towards ensuring decent working conditions for everyone as well as economic growth in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8, which aims to achieve full and productive employment, as well as decent work for all women and men by 2030.

The call comes as workers in the country prepare to join their colleagues around the world to commemorate May Day which falls tomorrow, Tuesday, 1 May 2018.

In Ghana, the day is celebrated with parades and speeches but Deputy General Secretary of ICU, Morgan Abawine has told Class News ahead of the celebration that the failure by stakeholders to implement May Day resolutions was unnerving.

He said: “We’re interested in SDG number 8 that focuses on pittance work. We think that government and the employers and labour must put our heads together so that we can deal with the menace of indecent work in our country.

“We have this problem in our country and I think all of us are guilty of this situation where we’ve been talking about casualisation and contract work for far too long. When we make May Day resolutions that we have these challenges confronting us, after May Day what happens next?

“Do we follow and deal with the issues, or do we put the issues on the shelves or we relax and come back another year and talk about them. We’ve been doing the talk shops but we don’t follow up with pragmatic actions to deal with these issues once and for all.”
