He has been accused by many, his government tagged as the most corrupt by far in some cases; his response? He is not corrupt and he is working assiduously to curb the canker and rid the country of it.

May have worked for some people, his explanations, but some others don’t subscribe to the defense.

For them, corruption can only be curbed if morally upright people are in charge of affairs; in other words, the country only has hopes of being ‘corruption-free’ if ‘non-corrupt’ persons are in high places.

They however can’t say same for the current Akufo-Addo government, they believe the President and his appointees are themselves corrupt, reason there is very little hope of an improvement in that light.

“Actually they haven’t done anything and I don’t think they can fight against corruption. Because they themselves they are corrupt, so there is no way the can fight against corruption unless they work on themselves before they can work on the citizens. Because he (the president) is corrupt, he himself he is corrupt, so he should work on himself before he comes out to work on us too”, an individual said when Ghanaweb caught up with a section of the public on the issue.

“He is not doing well because he’s been saying that corruption is on the rise and that he is trying to fight corruption. But so far we have not seen any improvement and it is rather increasing. A lot of things are happening now in the country that there are no solutions for”, another said.

One other person who believes the situation is not very different from previous ones said, “No government will ever do enough to fight corruption because they will keep promoting it. It is something that is always going to happen until we stop this NPP/NDC that everything we have to politicise it.”

For yet another Ghanaian though, he believes the President is doing his utmost best and this is evident in some measures he has taken by far in that direction.

He said, “I think he has done well, putting the Special Prosecutor there alone, he has done well. It’s just that we are not seeing the work that the special prosecutor is doing. But with his government I think that he has done well. We’ve been able to expose a lot of corrupt people in the system.”

On Monday, September 9, 2019, president Akufo-Addo, while speaking at the Annual General Conference of the Ghana Bar Association in Takoradi outlined some feats his government has chalked in its fight against graft.

But contrary to the high held expectations of Ghanaians, the president’s speech according to social media comments and other feedbacks was just an opportunity used to “clear himself and his government” of the various allegations of corruption that have come up since the commencement of his tenure. Something many Ghanaians believe has become much too usual.
