The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has summoned Parliament to reconvene on Monday, December 16, 2024, following his earlier indefinite suspension of the House.
This will be the first sitting of the House after the 2024 general elections and could be the last parliamentary sitting of the 8th Parliament before its dissolution.
Ahead of the sitting, some Ghanaians have shared their expectations regarding the order of business to be conducted in the chamber.
Speaking to GhanaWeb, the majority expressed hopes that taxes such as the Betting Tax, E-Levy, and other nuisance taxes would be discussed and scrapped to ease the burden on Ghanaians.
Others also expressed optimism that the lawmakers will raise the anti-LGBTQ topic, hoping they will work to facilitate and fast-track its passage into law.
“The E-Levy, Betting Tax should be canceled. The charges on it are unnecessary because how can you close tollbooths that generate revenue, and push the charges on the youth? When we stake our bet and win, they deduct 10% taxes too. It doesn’t make sense…,” one of them said.
Meanwhile, some Ghanaians said that the reconvening was unnecessary and pointless, given the short time left before the 8th Parliament is dissolved.
According to them, the short time left will not be sufficient for Parliament to make a significant impact or pass certain bills that will benefit the ordinary Ghanaian.
“In my view, the Speaker shouldn’t even come to Parliament, but ignore everyone. With all the time they had what are they coming to talk about again? The Speaker should feign sickness and absent himself to save everyone from the time-wasting,” he stated.
