Trouble Brews In NPP

While the New Patriotic Party leaves no stone unturned to strengthen its chances of winning the mandate of the people in the presidential election, its parliamentary base in most constituencies is, on the contrary, in turmoil.

A classic example of this unfortunate situation is the controversy surrounding the parliamentary seat of the Cheriponi constituency in the Northern region. Concerned loyalists of the NPP therefore cautioned the leadership of the party to sit up and amicably solve the issue in the interest of winning the seat.

Reports reaching the Free Press indicate that the constituency has since a recent primary held there, been thrown into a state of animosity among the supporters of NPP.

The intra-party acrimony has manifested itself in accusations and counter-accusations among supporters of two parliamentary aspirants, Dr. Bawa Ali Mamshi and Mrs. Doris Seidu. According to the reports, supporters of Dr. Bawa accused Madam Doris, the victor of the primary of using money and intimidation to defeat Dr. Bawa.

They contend that Madam Doris is not a native of Cheriponi and therefore unqualified to be the parliamentary candidate for the constituency. The supporters of Dr. Bawa even demonstrated against Madam Doris and petitioned the national executive of the NPP to nullify her candidature and give Dr. Bawa the nod.

They further accused the former teacher and employee of Action Aid, Ghana of incompetence and nocturnal dealings with members of the NDC. When contacted, Madam Doris denied all the allegations levelled against her. Describing them as the dirty work of her detractors, she explained that she had been a registered member of NPP since the dawn of democratic politics culminating in the birth of the Fourth Republic.
