Trouble Looms In Tamale

Tamale

Signboards and flags of the NDC and the NPP in Tamale (Northern region) have been subjected to random defacing and destruction in the last two weeks.

At present, no one has been able to expose those behind the act. However, as the people of Tamale try to unravel the mystery, there have been tacit recriminations among the followers of the two affected parties, thereby threatening the fragile peace in Tamale. This prompted the Municipal Security Committee (MUSEC) to convene a meeting of all the political parties to defuse the simmering tension within the polity of the municipality. The meeting was attended by constituency chairmen and organizers of the NDC, NPP and the PNC. Chairman of MUSEC and Chief Executive of the Tamale Municipal Assembly, Mr Adam Iddrisu, told them that the security and development of Tamale supersede the interest of any political party.

It is therefore their collective responsibility to stop any person or group within their ranks from fomenting trouble in the name of politics. Mr. Adam said every party has the legal right to announce its presence through its flags and billboards and to operate in any locality. So an attack on a party’s property is an attack on the law. He told the parties that political power is not forever as it will always change base, so those in power today need the support of all to govern. He appealed to them to prevail on their members to be law-abiding and conduct themselves peacefully.

The Chairman of the Gulkpegu-Sabongida, Alhaji Hamidu Iddrisu constituency said the NDC is a tolerant party that would not do anything to breach the peace. He exhorted politicians, especially those in government to verify information they receive on other parties before drawing conclusions. Alhaji Iddrisu added that such an approach could prevent tension and petty confrontation among the parties. The NPP Youth Organiser for the Gulkpegu-Sabongida Constituency, Mr. Nuhu Nkabo said as the ruling party, the NPPP is obliged to be in the forefront in the search for peace. He described the destruction of the billboards and flags as an unfortunate act that must be condemned by all. The two parties distanced themselves from the incident and pledged to caution their followers to desist from acts that would breach the peace.
