True Islam is religion of tolerance - Lanier

Accra, Nov. 2, GNA - Mr. Jerry Lanier, Deputy Chief of Mission of the United States of America (USA) Embassy on Sunday said true Islam is a religion of tolerance.

He said perhaps that is why the Muslim religion has found a hospitable reception in the United States, where believers are free to exercise their religion without any fear of opposition or suppression. Mr. said this when the US Embassy in Accra donated food items worth 6450 dollars to the Muslim Community at Nima.

The items made up of 4000 packets of food, fruit drinks, water and milk were measures by the US Embassy to assist deprived communities. He said for Muslims, Ramadan is a time of reflection and a time for charity, adding that it is also a time when you reach out a helping hand to your less fortunate neighbour.

Mr Lanier said it is in view of that Ramadan spirit of good works that the US Embassy have joined the Muslim community to assists the people.

Receiving the items, Nii Okraku II, Tema Mantse and a representative of the National Chief Imam, thanked the US Embassy for extending a hand of friendship to their Muslim brothers and sisters in Nima during this Ramadan period.

Mrs. Joyce Bawa Mogtari, Executive Secretary of Friends Against Global Terrorism (FAGLAT), an NGO and organizers of the event said the purpose of the programme was to foster a good relation between Ghanaian Muslim community and the US Embassy She said it was also to erase the wrong perception that the US was anti-Muslim.

She said for the second time running the FAGLAT had taken advantage of the Ramadan period to provide these food items to the people in the Muslim community.
