Accra, Oct. 3, GNA - Employees of Barclays Bank of Ghana Limited at the opening of a Barclays University on Monday were urged to develop themselves to be able to understand what they want in their career, in their lives and how they could attain that.

Dr. Charles Mensa, Chairman of the Barclays Board of Directors launching the Barclays University said the programme has been designed to provide all Barclays staff with the opportunity to learn, develop and to be all that they could be.

He said: " One exciting thing about the Barclays University is that employees can learn when it suits them most and can link into the Barclays university via a website containing self-assessment tools and on-line learning, accessible either from home or the workplace." Dr Mensa said the Barclays University would provide a learning culture of support and challenge as it has E-learning environment for individual study, on-site support and advice from the university's learning advisors.

"For employees of the bank who have a huge appetite for learning and personal development, I believe you will find in the Barclays University, a perfect partner. Get the most that you can out of this initiative and add value, not only to yourself but also to the role that you play as an employee of this great bank," he added.

Dr Mensa lauded the Barclays University initiative and said it requires the support of management and the patronage of all employees if it was to yield the required dividend.

Mrs. Margaret Mwanakatwe, Managing Director of Barclays Bank of Ghana, said the establishment of Barclays University would help employees to access the best available training and development opportunities, as the pace of change in business was faster and still accelerating.

Self-development, she said, had come to the fore of business development and it was important that employees pursue self-development and look out for opportunities to enable them to add value to themselves.

Mrs. Mwanakatwe said the university would offer a platform to employees to constantly renew themselves by acquiring more knowledge and learning from best practices elsewhere.

"This will enable them to develop different approaches to handling their job schedules and for resolving problems. Ultimately this will add value to our business as a bank," she added.

She said: " The Barclays University makes a comprehensive and flexible range of leaning opportunities to all staff, helping the organization and individuals to deliver the benefits we all want... given the current competitive environment in which banks in Ghana operate."

She expressed the wish that employees would patronize the facility to enable them to add value to the bank and to their lives.
