Tuition yet to take off in some SHSs

Academic work is yet to fully take off in some secondary schools implementing the double-track system under the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

A visit to some schools in Accra yesterday revealed that registration is still ongoing even though schools re-opened last Tuesday, September 11, 2018.

The Finder observed that tuition has taken off in some day SHSs even though registration is still in progress.

At the time of the visit yesterday, fresh students in some boarding schools were undergoing orientation as part of preparation to commence tuition.

Schools under the self-placement system continue to receive new students every day.

Labone SHS received 545 students for first track

At Labone Secondary School, out of the 545 students expected for the first track, 454 have reported.

This means that 91 students are yet to report.

Out of the 545 students posted to the school, 297 are day students while 248 are boarders.

A total of 138 day students are males while 159 are females.

Tuition has not started, and school authorities could not give a date when it will start, with the explanation that it will depend on when registration is completed.

40 New staff needed

The school, which is participating in the double-track system, requires 40 new staff, made up of 27 teaching and 13 non-teaching staff.

Presbyterian Boys’ SHS

At Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School – Legon (PRESEC), there was a long line of students who were still undergoing registration.

However, most students were being taken through orientation in preparation for tuition.

The assistant headmaster in charge of administration declined to speak to the media, saying he has to seek permission from the headmistress, who was not available at the time.

Tuition has not started, and school authorities could not give a date when it will start, with the explanation that it will depend on completion of registration.

Accra High SHS received 793 students for both tracks

At Accra High School, both Green and Gold tracks students have undergone registration.

Out of the 793 students expected for both tracks, 493 have reported for the first track.

This means 300 students will participate in the second track.

12 Teachers needed

The school, which is participating in the double-track system, requires 12 extra teachers.
