Twenty-three injured at Akwatia violence

Akwatia, Aug. 17, GNA - Twenty-three people were injured during the violence which erupted at Akwatia on Saturday and Sunday. All but five of the injured were treated and discharged at both the Saint (ST) Dominic and the Ghana Consolidated Diamond (GCD) hospitals both at Akwatia.

A visit to the hospitals by the GNA revealed that the victims suffered mainly from gun shot, knife and stone wounds. No death had however been reported.

The five on admission at the ST Dominic hospital are Mr Kwadwo Frempong, 23, who had multiple wounds on the head when he was hit by stones and was also clubbed on the right shoulder and Mr Emmanuel Antwi, 21, who had his left ear almost severed and had it stitched. The rest are Mr Kofi Zor, 26, who was injured when his forehead was hit by a tear gas canister and was taken to the hospital unconscious, Miss Doris Boahene, 15, a primary school pupil who received a gun shot wound and Mr Yakubu Ali, 23, who had his a finger each on both hands chopped off and a deep cut on the left palm. They are responding to treatment.

Those treated and discharged at the GCD hospital were Miss Priscilla Boakye 15, who had a knife wound on the lower jaw, Samuel Dagadu 14, who was assaulted and Mr Edward Appiah, 44, who had head wounds when he was hit by a block and pestle during an attack by a mob.

Osabarima Kofi Boateng III, the Akwatiahene, visited both hospitals to wish those on admission speedy recovery.

At the St Dominic hospital he was conducted round by Dr (Mrs) Mercy Dawson, Medical Superintendent in-charge of the hospital. Meanwhile, Akwatia and communities within five miles radius spent the first night of an 11-hour curfew slapped on them.

The police last night arrested seven persons who broke the curfew and are being held at the Akwatia police station. Akwatia as at the time of filing the story is calm with people going about their normal duties.
