Two accidents record four deaths and 19 injured in Wa

Wa, Feb. 2, GNA - Four persons were killed and 19 others

injured in two separate accidents involving a cargo truck and a

Metro Mass Transit (MMT) bus within the Wa Municipality of the

Upper West Region. In the latest accident which occurred on January 31, on the Wa-

Loggu road involving a Cargo Truck with Registration number GT

3468 G, two women died on the spot while 18 others sustained

various injuries. According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Joseph

Oppong, the Regional MTTU Commander, the bodies of the

deceased, Halitu Memuna 60 and Seidu Fatuma 79 had since been

released to their families for burial after a post-mortem examination

was conducted. Those who sustained injuries have been treated and discharged

from the Wa Government Hospital. ASP Oppong told the Ghana News Agency that the truck was

loaded with charcoal with market traders on board when the

accident occurred close to the Wa Senior High School. The MTTU Commander said the driver, Salam Salifu, 28,

explained that he was trying to dodge some mango trees that had

their branches covering part of the road to protect those sitting on

top but in the process, his steer got locked up and he veered off the

road resulting in the accident. He said the vehicle examiner was yet to confirm the truth or

otherwise of the explanation given by the driver. ASP Oppong said on January 22, an MMT bus with Registration

Number GR 1503 U also knocked down three boys who were riding

on a push cart moving in the same direction with the bus which was

trying to overtake them. He said the boys were then knocked down by the bus when their

push cart rather veered and crossed the path of the bus. Mumuni Mujeeb 15, died instantly while Abdul-Karim Hanan 11,

and Abubakar Saani sustained injuries and were rushed to the Wa

Government Hospital where Hanan later died on the same day. Abubakar Saani is still on admission at the hospital responding to

treatment. ASP Oppong lamented the carelessness on the roads and

regretted that people turned to blame the Police even when accidents

occurred as a result of irresponsible road users. He said both drivers were in Police custody assisting in

investigations.
