Aflao (V/R), Feb 26, GNA- The Aflao Police are hunting for two "notorious" armed robbers who escaped arrest during a robbery incident at Aflao last Tuesday.

The two, whose names were being withheld had their accomplices, Yao Fiawoyi, alias Sherif, 28 and Afenuku Amuzu 30, arrested by the Aflao Police and some volunteers at dawn on Tuesday.

Mr Baba Moro, Assistant Superintendent of Police in charge of crime at Aflao, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that those arrested and the two now on the run were being sought by INTERPOL in both Togo and Ghana, for their involvement in a number of robberies in the two countries. The crime officer said the incident took place at Fiokope near Aflao involving about 7 million cedis.

He said Fiawoyi, who had several robbery and theft cases pending against him at the Aflao Circuit Court jumped bail sometime last year and was being sought for.

Mr Moro said at about 0430 hours on Tuesday, the four took positions around the main transport terminal at Aflao where they found a traveller who had arrived at the station en route to Lome, Togo.

He said they pounced on the traveller and took his travelling bag from him and took to their heels.

Mr Moro said some onlookers raised an alarm and quickly informed the Police who pursued the four to Torkukope beach about two and half kilometres away where Afenuku and Fiawoyi were arrested.

He said three of the volunteers who helped in the arrest of the robbers were slightly injured and were treated at the Aflao District Hospital. Mr Moro said one locally manufactured short gun was retrieved from Fiawoyi, adding that the two would be put before court soon.
