Two arrested over alleged extortion in GES recruitment exercise

The Ghana Education Service (GES) says two people have been arrested and arraigned before the Accra Circuit Court 6 over an alleged attempt to demand money from applicants in connection with the ongoing GES recruitment exercise.

According to the GES, four suspects were identified in connection with the alleged scheme, with two arrested while the remaining two are currently at large.

In a statement posted on its Facebook page on Friday, August 28, 2026, the GES said the arrests were made in collaboration with the security agencies as part of efforts to protect applicants from being exploited by individuals promising to secure jobs for them.

The Service stressed that recruitment into the GES is free and follows established procedures.

“Recruitment into the Ghana Education Service is free and undertaken through established procedures,” the GES stated.

The development comes at a time when many job seekers are looking to secure positions through the ongoing recruitment exercise, making them potential targets for individuals who may attempt to take advantage of their desperation for employment.

The GES said its management had been closely monitoring the recruitment process and would not allow individuals to use the exercise to defraud applicants or damage the reputation of the Service.

It also rejected suggestions that the arrests amounted to a scandal involving the GES or its recruitment process.

“No scandal has hit the Ghana Education Service or the ongoing recruitment exercise. Rather, persons alleged to have engaged in criminal activities have been identified, arrested, and brought before the law,” the Service said.

The GES has consequently cautioned applicants and members of the public against handing money to anyone who claims to have connections to secure recruitment, appointment letters or placement within the Service.

“Management therefore urges members of the public to remain vigilant and refrain from paying money to anyone who claims to have the ability to secure recruitment, appointment letters or placement within the Ghana Education Service,” it added.

The Service further assured the public that it would continue to work with the security agencies to identify and deal with individuals attempting to exploit job seekers.

“Management further assures the public that it will continue to take decisive action against individuals who attempt to defraud applicants or bring the name of the Ghana Education Service into disrepute,” the statement said.

The GES also appealed to members of the public to assist the authorities by reporting suspected cases of fraud and providing information that could help investigators identify other persons involved.
