Koforidua, Jan. 25, GNA - The Birim North and Kwahu North districts in the Eastern Region are to implement the NEPAD/Ghana Government free-hot-meal programme for basic school pupils as from this academic year.

According to the Eastern Regional Directorate of Education sources in Koforidua on Monday, the programme is expected to benefit a total of 27,074 pupils from the pre-school up to junior secondary school (JSS) in the Birim North District and 23,759 in the Kwahu North District, respectively.

According to the sources, basic school pupils in the two districts were already enjoying free supply of uniforms and a waiver of levies in respect of culture, sports and printing of examination questions since last academic year under a special HIPC Fund dispensation.

The dispensation for the two districts, according to the source, also covered other 38 districts selected under a government poverty alleviation programme to enable needy pupils to stay in school to higher levels.
