Two get 15 years each for robbery

Two people were on Tuesday sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each by an Accra Circuit Court for robbing one Cherubim Awagbe of his Nissan Navara Pick-up.

Enyonam Anthony, a car washer and Amadu Moro, a scrap dealer, both pleaded not guilty to the charge but were found guilty by the Court and are to serve 15 years each in hard labour.

Chief State Attorney William Kpobi told the Court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, that the complainant is the Marketing Consultant of Mono Eco Green Energy Ghana Limited.

He said on October 26, 2011, the complainant was returning home from work with his Nissan Navara Pick-up.

He said on reaching a spot near Stay Light School at the Ashiaman complex, he parked his car without putting off the engine and got down from the vehicle to urinate.

He told the Court that no sooner had he alighted when an Opel Kadet taxi appeared, by passed the complainants car and parked in front of it.

Chief State Attorney Kpobi said the occupants of the taxi numbering about five to six unidentified armed men, alighted, attacked the complainant with guns and cutlasses and in the process inflicted a deep cutlass wound and multiple slashes on the right forearm and abdominal wall.

He said the robbers entered the complainant’s vehicle and sped off together with its contents including his registered pistol.

He said the robbers abandoned the taxi, which was discovered to have been snatched from another victim and a report was made to the police.

According to the prosecution, on July 24, 2012, a night patrol team from Greater Accra intercepted a taxi with the convicts at Tema Community 18, having in their possession a scrow-bar, scissors and cutter looking for a target to rob and were arrested.

Chief State Attorney Kpobi told the Court that the complainant had a wind of the arrest and followed up to the police station and in an identification parade he identified the convicts as part of the robbers that attacked him and snatched his car.

On interrogation the convicts told the police that they are thieves who have specialised in breaking into people’s shops to steal but not robbers as claimed by the complainant.
