Two persons remanded for deceiving a Minister

Accra, June 21 GNA- An Accra Circuit Court on Monday remanded two unemployed persons to prison custody for defrauding and stealing. They are to re-appear on June 28.

Kwabena Asiedu alias Capo, and Isaac Kwasi Manu, pleaded not guilty to defrauding by false pretences, stealing, possession of fake currency and deceit of a public officer.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Benedicta Akolgo said Kwabena Aseidu informed the Police that there existed a fake currency note printing syndicate in Accra and Kumasi.

She said with that information, the first accused convinced the Police to give him one million cedis on the pretext that he could buy some of the fake currency with the genuine money for evidence so that the culprits could be arrested.

She said after collecting the money, Asiedu led a team of Police Officers to Mallam, a suburb of Accra and vanished.

Chief Inspector Akolgo said on June 14, Kwabena Asiedu presented to Mr. Hackman Owusu-Agyeman, Minister of the Interior some fake notes amounting to twenty-five thousand cedis and told the Minister that a member of the syndicate gave them to him.

She said the Minister organised a Police operation to arrest the culprits and confiscate the printing machine.

She said on June 15, the first accused led the Police to Kumasi with the view to arresting the members.

Chief Inspector Akolgo also said it was later found that the first accused had arranged with the second accused to dupe the police, the Minister, and later a Purchasing Clerk from Sefwi, They were therefore arrested.
