Two schools in Suhum-Kraboa-Coaltar District to be given one billion

Suhum (E/R), Aug. 31, GNA - The Government would release about one billion cedis to improve infrastructure in two schools in the Suhum-Kraboa-Coaltar District in the Eastern Region.

Each of the schools Suhum Secondary Technical and the Suhum Islamic Girls' High School would receive 500 million cedis each.

This was announced by President John Agyekum Kufuor when addressing a durbar of the chiefs and people in the District at Suhum to round off his four-day official visit to the Region on Tuesday.

He announced that the Government would provide 500 million cedis for electrification projects in surrounding villages of Suhum while the Government Hospital would be refurbished and equipped in view of its strategic position and the many accidents that occurred on the Accra - Kumasi Highway.

Barima Ayeh Kofi, Chief of Suhum, commended the Government for improving the cocoa industry with the introduction of hi-tech and the mass spraying exercise that had enable cocoa farmers to increase their yields to earn more incomes.

He appealed to President Kufuor not to be discouraged by the utterances of his political opponents but to continue with the policies and programmes that had improved the standard of living of the rural folks and pledged their unflinching support for the Government. Barima Kofi appealed to the Government to improve the water supply system and to pay compensation for lands released to the Government. President Kufuor addressed a similar durbar of the chiefs and people of the Akwapim South District at Adoagyiri.

He reiterated the Government's pledge to ensure a peaceful, free and fair elections and appealed to the Electoral Commission (EC) to be independent and unbiased in their operations.

Nana Adu Kookoo, Chief of Adoagyiri, commended the Government for the provision of basic amenities such as schools; potable water and health facilities in many towns in the District.

He appealed to the youth to assist the Government in its pledge to ensure peaceful elections by refraining from acts that would affect the elections in December.

President Kufuor has since returned to Accra.
