Two technical institutes in the Upper East Region have been provided with technical equipment and machinery valued at 1.4 million dollars, under the Ghana Education Service Vocational and Technical Education (VOTEC) Resource Centre Project.
The equipment was funded by the Ghana and Netherlands governments and is expected to boost technical and vocational education throughout the country.
The machines have been installed in the Bawku and Bolgatanga technical institutes, the beneficiaries at separate hand-over ceremonies.
In an address, the Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Mahami Salifu, stressed the need for the equipment and said the beneficiaries would be able to absorb the backlog of JSS pupils who could not gain admission to other second cycle schools.
Mr Salifu added that the calibre of products to come out of the institute would raise the level of employment and break the vicious cycle of poverty of the people in the region.
The Programmes Manager of TNW Export, Mr Gerrit Esser, the main suppliers of the equipment said the project would boost the quality of technical training and services.
The Acting Director of Technical and Vocational Division of the GES, Mr Amos Nyameke Kaku, said the programme would facilitate the teaching and learning of technical studies and provide opportunities for students to pursue higher technical and vocational education.
The principals of the Bawku and Bolgatanga technical institutes, Alhaji Alhassan Umar, and Mr Martin Aloora respectively, expressed gratitude to the funding governments for the equipment and pledged to put them to good use.
