Two top NDC men resign

MOMENTS after Dr Obed Asamoah’s narrow victory at the marathon National Democratic Congress (NDC) congress, the party registered a major setback with the resignation of two of its regional chairmen.

Nana Alex Asamoah, Western, and Dr Ato Quarshie, Central, who is also the MP for Komenda, resigned from their positions in the party in an apparent protest at the outcome of the elections at the party’s congress which ended yesterday.

A Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) report quoted Mr Asamoah as having explained that his resignation was not as a result of Dr Obed Yao Asamoah’s victory in the race for the chairmanship of the party which became a thorny issue before the congress.

“My decision is purely against the manner in which money was distributed to influence delegates to vote for one candidate or the other,” Mr Asamoah said.

Dr Quarshie on the other hand refused to comment.

Later in an interview with the Daily Graphic, Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu called on the two chairmen to rescind their decision to resign reports Charles Benoni Okine.

He said the party needs the two more than ever before because they have to bring their rich experience and expertise to bear on the party, as it makes attempts to re-organise for a succesful campaign in the 2004 elections.

Alhaji Mahama said there is no need for anyone to resign because of the outcome of the elections pointing out that, notwithstanding the results, it is the party that has come out victorious and not any single individual. He said “I have personally accepted the narrow defeat which underscores the depth of support I command in the party and I promise to work together with Dr Asamoah and the others to unite the party.”

The former Vice President, Professor Evans Attah Mills, had earlier requested the two chairmen to rescind their decision.

He said there is now the need for all to bury their differences and work in unity in the interest of the party.
