About 600 Ghanaians are to be employed by virtue of the ongoing United States Embassy building project in Accra. This was disclosed by the Director and Chief Operating Officer for the United States Department of States Overseas Building Operations (OBO), Hon. General Charles Williams during the sod cutting ceremony for the US embassy building project.
"The project will boost the local economy by infusing about 13million dollars in the form of local procurement of construction materials, machinery, tools and equipment and salaries for workers", he indicated.
General Williams added that the project which will cost 63million dollars will include a perimeter security system, a 8900 square meter chancery building, GSO support annex with a warehouse and workshops, a recreational facility, two utility buildings, marine guards quarters and three compound access controls.
According to him, the new embassy project when completed in April 2007 will be the new work place for American personnel and agencies in the country as well as local residents who support the mission of the embassy.
The outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, Mary Carlin Yates in her speech, indicated that the new embassy building when completed will be a showcase for American and Ghanaian programmes and projects for all the United States government agencies working in the county.
