Cape Coast, Dec. 1, GNA- The authorities of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) on Friday honoured 46 workers of the University for their long, meritorious and dedicated service, at ceremony in Cape Coast. Forty-two retired staff members who had worked with the UCC between 15 and 43 years were each presented with a citation and deep freezers, all valued at GH A232.859.

Addressing the gathering, Reverend Professor Emmanuel Addo Obeng, Vice Chancellor of the UCC, congratulated the award winners for their valued contributions to the growth and development of the university. He said the awards were a token of appreciation and gratitude, since it cannot represent the value of their contribution to the institution.

He said as the University bids farewell to the retired staff, it was time to remind those in active service, the value and reward for commitment, loyalty and hard work. The Vice Chancellor said the awards ceremony should be an occasion for them to evaluate their relationship with the University and renew their commitment to its progress. He expressed his regrets about staff members spending the greater part of working hours idling, gossiping or are seen doing their private work.

Professor Obeng said such attitudes should be discarded, stressing that it was only an attitude of dedication, commitment, self-discipline, loyalty and concern for the good of the university that can make a difference "Punctuality and regularity, judicious use of official time are essential, if we are to demonstrate commitment to our job, and I assure you that my administration is ready to recognize and reward hard work and commitment".

Professor Obeng also the best workers and gave the assurance that payment of bonuses from the Sam Jonah endowment and internally generated funds to all categories of staff would be done at the end of the calendar year.

Professor Kojo Eyeson, of the UCC, on behalf of the recipients thanked the authorities for the kind gesture and promised that they would continue sharing their expertise and experience. He suggested that the counseling and human resource centres of the UCC should organize orientation courses for the staff who are due for retirement, this he noted would help condition them properly since its was not easy to be on retirement. 01 Dec. 07
