The students argued that the introduction of the soo called 'Development Levy' was illegal
About one thousands students of the Nyankpala campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS) have signed a petition demanding a refund of a Development Levy they paid as part of their school fees September last year.
In a petition to the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) copied to the Ministry of Education and other relevant bodies, the students bemoaned the introduction of the "Development Levy" and labelled it as unlawful since it contravenes a directive issued by the NTCE on the 7th August, 2017, which directed all public universities across the country not to increase their school fees nor introduce new levies but maintain all fees and charges of the previous year.
The students argued that the introduction of the soo called "Development Levy" was illegal and must be refunded because it contradicts the above directive by the National Council for Tertiary Education.
The students further indicated that 'illegal' monies they paid were not even properly accounted for, as no value for money was established in the projects their monies were supposedly used for.
They explained that the Government of Ghana had awarded a contract for the construction of a 7km road on the Nyankpala Campus, which covers the major campus roads hence the construction of walkways are needless.
They have, therefore, served notice of an intended peaceful walk from the office of the Students Representative Council (SRC) to the office of the Campus Principal to register their displeasure and demand for the immediate refund of their monies.
