UDS undergoes accreditation review

National Accreditation Board (NAB) has undertaken a review of the programmes and operations of the University for Development Studies (UDS) to ascertain if they are in line with required standards.

As part of the review process, officials of NAB toured various facilities at the UDS’ Tamale campus, interacted with students and held a meeting with the University’s authorities to find out about its quality of teaching and learning, student-lecturer relationship, and the nature of its facilities.

This was the first time NAB had reviewed UDS’ programmes and operations since it was established in 1992 even though the law requires that public universities undergo such a process every five years.

Dr Kingsley Nyarko, Acting Executive Secretary of NAB, who briefed the Ghana News Agency after the review process in Tamale on Thursday, said UDS was doing well but added that NAB would in the coming days write a comprehensive report about its findings for the UDS to act on.

Dr Nyarko said “We looked at the issues that we thought were important for teaching and learning, and we made our observations known to the University authorities. What we are going to do is to go back, and send them a comprehensive report for them to look at.”

He said “there will be issues that have to be addressed but in all, we need to ensure that quality standards are adhered to” as it was necessary to produce quality human resource for the development of the country.

Professor Seidu Al-hassan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of UDS lauded the accreditation review exercise saying it should be regular because it was very revealing adding “We already know some of the things and we are working on them.”
