Winneba (C/R), July 25, GNA - The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has received a renewal grant of 1,500,000 US dollars from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to expand distance education delivery, library automation and gender mainstreaming.

The grant spans July 1 2010 to June 30 2013.

This was contained in a press release issued by the University and signed by Mr Christopher Akwaa-Mensah, Registrar of the University.

According to the release, the aim of the project was to expand the provision of distance education programmes through course material development, effective administration of assessment and improvement of student support services.

"The goal of the project is to promote excellence by expanding and increasing timely access to information resources including local content and improve service to the teaching, learning, research and administrative sectors of the university," it said.

To that effect, the project, when completed, will improve access to online resources and services, enhance the capability of library users in their search for information, strengthen and enrich print collection at the graduate level.

It would also bring together facilities for users to access information and collaborate with others in their search for information, the release said.

It said the project sought to consolidate the success achieved so far in gender issues in the University and bridge further, gaps related to female representation in the university.

It would also strengthen the capacity of staff in the area of research, enhance the university's capacity to address gender issues and thereby eliminate inequalities.

The release said the UEW appreciated the valuable contribution that the Corporation had made to the development of education in Ghana.
