UK teachers and N/R counterparts in exchange programme

Tamale, June 3, GNA - A Tamale-based nongovernmental organisation (NGO) dedicated to providing humanitarian and development services to deprived communities has instituted an exchange programme between teachers in the United Kingdom and their counterparts in the Northern Region.

Under the programme, teachers from linked schools in the U.K. would exchange teaching experience with their counterparts in 28 selected schools in the Northern Region.

Mrs Christiana Yakubu Nahyi, Project Officer of Regional Advisory Information and Network Systems (RAINS)/Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED), announced this at a day's workshop for teachers from the linked schools, in Tamale on Thursday. RAINS/CAMFED and Harambee, a UK-based NGO, organised the workshop for some 70 schoolteachers drawn from the 28 selected schools and four teachers from the U.K.

RAINS/CAMFED is supporting schools in the Northern Region while Harambee is also supporting schools in U.K. to improve academic and infrastructure development.

The workshop offered the teachers the forum to share ideas and strategise to meet the challenges facing the educational system in Ghana, especially the Northern Region and the U.K. The teachers from the UK would introduce to their Ghanaian colleagues the positive and negative school life in the U.K. and how the government was addressing the problem.

Mrs Nahyi called for a concerted effort to ensure the sustenance of the programme to improve education in the two countries. She said four teachers from the UK had already visited and taught in some of the linked schools in the Northern Region.
