The United Nations (UN) through its Acting Resident Coordinator in Ghana, Ms Sylvia Lopez-Ekra, has condemned the murder of Ghanaian journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale, in Accra, on Wednesday, 16 January 2019.

The UN has subsequently called for a prompt, thorough and transparent investigation into Mr Hussein-Suale’s death and full accountability for those responsible.

According to the UN, failure to bring perpetrators of human rights violations to justice creates a climate of impunity which perpetuate the cycle of violence against journalists.

The UN in a statement reiterating the message of the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, on the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists said: “When journalists are targeted, societies as a whole pay a price. This should not become the new normal”.

“Protecting the fundamental right to freedom of expression also requires the journalists and media workers be protected, and actions be taken to proactively promote their safety,” the statement said.

Hussein-Suale an associate of ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas played a significant role in a recent undercover documentary that exposed rot in Ghana and Africa football.

The documentary led to the suspension of over 40 referees in Africa and the resignation of Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi.
