Accra, July 6, GNA - Mr Kamil Kamalndeen, Country Director of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), on Wednesday pledged support to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) by responding effectively and efficiently to the influx of refugees into the country.

"UNDP will support NADMO to respond to disaster activities, strengthen and provide support to disaster risk management with equipment to respond to better and effective work," he added.

Mr Kamalndeen made the pledge when he presented a Toyota Prado Land Cruiser, two motor bikes, 10 radio handsets, two desk top computers, two printers, two scanners and other communication equipment to NADMO in Accra.

He explained that the equipment would help provide easy and quick service to inaccessible areas in Brong Ahafo and the Western Regions mostly affected by floods through regular communications.

Mr Kofi Porturphy, National Coordinator of NADMO expressed appreciation to UNDP and development partners in their humanitarian efforts to help Ghanaian returnees from Libya, Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire.

He said the greatest challenge facing NADMO was communication to coordinate the Western and Brong Ahafo Regions and that the equipment would improve their operations.

Mr Porturphy said NADMO had developed some recovery programmes for flood victims through disaster reduction in the communities, schools and hospitals.

He recounted how over the years the country had experienced floods in the southern parts during which the UNDP had been of immense support and provided safety and comfort to flood victims. Mr Porturphy assured UNDP that the equipment would be well utilised.
