US Ambassador to Ghana, Stephanie S. Sullivan on March 2, 2019, joined forces with the Mayor of Accra and Ghanaian environmental Non-Governmental Organizations to clean up the Osu beach in commemoration of the World Wildlife Day.

According to the Us Ambassador to Ghana, she took part in the exercise because she believes caring for the environment is a shared responsibility.

“We have a similar saying that many hands make light work and I think caring for the environment is a shared responsibility for all of us” she said.

Stephanie S. Sullivan said aside the hospitality Ghanaians give to their visitors, Ghanaians should be conscious of keeping their surroundings, including the beaches clean to attract more people to visit the place.

She stated that, “Let’s be conscious of plastics, let’s be conscious of the dispose off our waste and we look forward to more news about opportunities to recycle and properly dispose of waste so that we have a really clean beach here in Accra and as we are in Ghana, it’s really one of the treasures that people admire apart from the hospitality of the Ghanaian people. The beaches are also of a very big attraction.”

Speaking to the media after the exercise, Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah noted that, his outfit would be commissioning a treatment plant that can recycle and provide compose for about 400,000 tons of waste daily.

The treatment plant, when commissioned would be a major boost in the fight against improper disposal of waste in the country.

He said “ In a couple of weeks within this month, we’ll be commissioning a waste treatment plant that can recycle and provide compose for about 400,000 tons of waste daily and that will be a major boost in our fight against bad attitudes in terms of the environment over here because as we collect the waste from the city, we have to travel very far for over 100km to go and come back but once we have these transfer stations and a recycling and a compost plant in the city centre, we have a shorter turnaround time and we’ll be able to collect the over 300,000 tons of waste that is generated daily in Accra”.
