Accra, April 14, GNA - Nii Armah Ashittey, Greater Accra Regional Minister on Tuesday called on the United States government to support the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to manage the excessive waste engulfing the Accra metropolis.

He said waste management remained a major challenge to the RCC and said the traditional method of disposing waste by using landfills was ineffective and outmoded.

Nii Ashitey made the call when the US Ambassador, Mr Donald Gene Teitellebaum paid a courtesy call on him in Accra.

The Minister recalled the close economic relations that had existed between Ghana and the US in previous years, saying that the visit of former US Presidents, Mr Bill Clinton and Mr George Walker Bush to Ghana

years back attested to the strong ties. H also mentioned the US government's support to malaria control and

the construction of the Tetteh-Quarshe - Mallam roads funded by the Millennium Challenge Account as some of the ongoing projects. Nii Ashittey expressed the hope that the ties between the two countries would be further strengthened in a way that would go beyond just co-operation between diplomatic heads and government but the citizenry as well. Mr Teitellebaum pledged the US government's support for the mutual benefit of the two countries.
