The leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, has told members to consider the choice of the next president of the United States as the lesser of two evils.

Speaking on a flight to Rome on Friday, the Pope, without mentioning the two presidential candidates, former President Donald Trump of the Republican Party and Vice President Kamala Harris of the Democratic Party, pointed out his concerns about the two, noting that they are both “against life” in respective ways.

“You must choose the lesser evil,” he stated. “Who is the lesser evil? That lady or that gentleman? I don’t know. Everyone, in conscience, [has to] think and do this.”

Abortion and immigration remain key determinants in American politics, and according to the Pope, refusing to welcome immigrants is a “grave” sin and abortion is akin to an “assassination.” Hence, the electorate must choose between the lesser of two evils.

He, however, emphasised the need for citizens to exercise their franchise, noting that “not voting is ugly.

“It is not good. You must vote,” he stated.

The Catholic Church throughout history has maintained a strong stance against abortion while, on the other hand, urging countries to be more open when it comes to issues of immigration.

The Biden-Harris administration continues to tout itself as pro-abortion, having ensured various policies aimed at helping women to have a choice when it comes to abortion.

Trump, on the other hand, maintains a strong position against immigration, having indicated plans of instituting various anti-immigration policies if elected president in November.

America is 50 days away from its November 5 presidential election, which has Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump as the lead contenders.
