The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has awarded the prestigious National Medal of Technology to Dr. Victor Lawrence, a Ghanaian-born U.S.-based electrical engineer, inventor, and telecommunications expert.

The award recognises Dr. Lawrence's groundbreaking work in digital signal processing, which played a pivotal role in the transition from analog to digital networks.

Dr. Lawrence's contributions have greatly advanced early internet access technology and global data communications, solidifying his reputation as a pioneering scientist and innovator, as reported by citinewsroom.com.

With more than 20 patents to his name, Dr. Lawrence’s work has been instrumental in shaping the digital infrastructure of the modern world.

Notably, he is the first African-born recipient of this prestigious honor, underscoring his global impact in the fields of science and technology.

Dr. Lawrence attended Achimota School in Accra from 1957 to 1964, where his passion and desire for science were first nurtured.

He continued his education at Imperial College London, graduating with a degree in electrical engineering.

Before relocating to the United States, Dr. Lawrence spent a year teaching at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana after completing his graduate studies there in 1972.

His most notable accomplishments occurred while he was employed at the prestigious Bell Laboratories, where he pioneered innovations in telecommunications and digital signal processing.
