Asesewa (E/R), June 18, GNA - A United States manufacturing Company, General Electric (GE), is to transform the Asesewa Health Centre, in the Eastern Region into a major child welfare medical facility.
The Company is providing the Centre with anaesthesia gadgets; ultra-sound scanners; x-ray machines; incubators, fridges and freezers for the storage of vaccines for the project take off. Mr Bob Corcoran, Vice-President in charge of Corporate Citizenship of the GE, made this known on Thursday at a durbar of the chiefs and people of Asesewa in the Manya Krobo District.
The durbar was to honour the GE team, for showing commitment for the development of the town.
Asesewa community is far from the nearest major health centres at Atua and Koforidua, leading to the death of the critically ill and pregnant women.
Mr Corcoran said it was the vision of GE that children should be well catered for to enable them to realise their potentials. He said it was this belief that informed the company's decision to provide special incubators to the Centre to ensure that "Even children born after three minutes could survive".
Mr Corcoran said the Company held discussions with Professor Agyeman Badu Akosah, Director-General of the Ghana Health Services, on the possibility of providing special incubators to other health facilities. Dr Derrick Nii Aryee, Programme Support Manager of Plan International, appealed to the people to give priority attention to the health needs of their children.
Plan International, an international non-governmental organisation is the collaborating partner of GE.
The Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Gustav Narh Dometey, commended the GE for its generous offer, describing it as a significant step towards strengthening the bond between Ghana and the United States. He said the National Health Insurance Policy of the government was to ensure that health services were available and affordable to all Ghanaians, no matter their status.
The Member of Parliament for Upper Manya, Mr Stephen Amoanor, charged the people, irrespective of their political affiliations, to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
