US continues support for Ghana

Taviefe, (V/R) Feb. 15, GNA -United States Ambassador Pamela Bridgewater on Wednesday said the US would continue to support Ghana in all areas of development, especially in education and health care delivery.

She was speaking at a meeting with chiefs and community leaders of Taviefe in the Ho municipality, where a US Naval Medical Research Department is studying the mode of transmission of a skin condition in humans, which presents itself as lesions and grows into sores, difficult to treat.

Ambassador Bridgewater, who is on a two-day visit to the Ho Municipality said the US would support the research going on in collaboration with the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, Ghana Health Service (GHS) until a cure was found to the disease. "We want to help find a cure to the skin problem in the area and we would do it," she stated.

Ambassador Bridgewater said the US was also cooperating with research institutions to find a vaccine against malaria which was a major health problem in Ghana.

The Ambassador who lauded the good ties between the US and Ghana said her country's was providing funding for many projects in Ghana through organizations such as the USAID.

Lieutenant Gregory Raczaiak, a US Navy Medical Officer who took the Ambassador round said the main job at the project site was to trap the various kinds of sandfly, suspected to be carrying the parasite causing the disease for study.
