US wipes of $1.6 bn debt

US President Bill Clinton has announced the immediate cancellation of of about $1.6 billion of bilateral debt owed to the US by African nations, including Ghana.

Additionally, he has pledged $500 million worth of investments for the continent to help accelerate the pace of the continent's economic growth, development and prosperity.

The package was unveiled at a news conference in South Africa at the conclusion of a four-day visit to the country. He has since left for neighbouring Botswana.
