The United States of America (USA) Ambassador to Ghana, Donald Teitelbaum, on Tuesday inaugurated 24 American Peace Corp Volunteers expected to work in the Ghana Education Service (GES) at Anyinasin near Akyem-Tafo.

He asked the volunteers to zealously serve the various communities that they would be posted to indicate the commitment of America to the development of Ghana.

The volunteers, who had gone through a three-month training in local language, culture and the Ghana educational curriculum, particularly in Mathematics, Science and Visual Arts, would be posted to Junior High Schools and Senior High Schools to teach for three years.

The Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Mr. Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, said there were many vacancies in the rural areas because trained teachers had refused postings to those communities due to lack of development.

He said that the situation had remained a challenge to the education sector, and hoped that Ghanaian teachers would take a cue from the volunteers who were ready to serve in any community where their services would be needed.

Mr. Terlabi said Science was a “fearful” subject and asked the volunteers “to use their skills and knowledge to demystify the learning of science to generate overwhelming interest among students, especially girls.”
