USAG Rubbishes Allegations Against President

The national Executive Committee (NEC) of the University Students’ Association of Ghana (USAG) is urging all members of the Association and the general public to disregard the recent publications against its president, Innocent Badasu, and to treat the group that passed the “resolution with the contempt it deserves”. This was contained in a press release dated 13th August, 2011, which challenges the purported Senate meeting held recently, calling it “illegal, null and void”. The release was issued after a meeting of eleven (11) NEC members at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology including the Press and information Secretary, the financial controller, SRC presidents of University of Development Studies (UDS), University of Education Winneba-Kumasi, University of Education Winneba , Garden City University College, Central University College (CUC) and KNUST-Sunyani campus. Others were the acting SRC president of the University of Ghana and SRC Vice President of KNUST-Kumasi.

According to the NEC members, “there was not even a single member institution duly represented in accordance with Article 18(d)”. They challenged the organisers of the “Illegal” meeting to produce the attendance sheet of the said meeting to counter this claim, adding that the meeting could not have constituted a quorum.

They further state that the fact that the Association’s President, Innocent Badasu was not invited to preside over that particular meeting breached article 30(d) of USAG’s constitution and that “the coordinating Secretary-elect and the General Secretary-elect who chaired the said meeting are not qualified to assume their duties since they have not ascribed appropriately to the official oath of the association”.

The release accused the organisers of the purported senate meeting of using a fake letterhead devoid of security features.

NEC members present at the meeting told focus news in an interview that none of the allegations being levelled against the President could be substantiated in the light of their investigations.

“We also wish to affirm our confidence in the President (Innocent Badasu) of the Association and will continue to collaborate with all student leaders to promote the interest of the Ghanaian University student”, the release emphasised, urging people with concerns regarding the activities of the Association to respect the structures by addressing all concerns to the judicial Board.
