USAID Ghana gets new Country Director

Accra, Aug. 27, GNA - Ms Cheryl Anderson, a former Peace Corps Volunteer in Ghana, has been appointed the new USAID/Ghana Mission Country Director.

Prior to her appointment, Ms Anderson was the USAID/East Africa Regional Mission Director in Kenya since June, 2006, a statement issued to the Ghana News Agency in Accra by the US Embassy said. The statement said Ms Anderson joined USAID/East Africa in November 2004 as Deputy Director.

Ms Anderson's responsibilities would include managing USAID programmes in Ghana which partners the country in strengthening good governance, promoting improved agricultural practices and food security, improving health care delivery, and enhancing basic education. She has over 20 years of development experience, mostly in Africa. Her experience in Africa began in Ghana as a Peace Corps Volunteer, where she taught Mathematics and French at Archbishop Porter Girls' High School in Takoradi from 1981 to 1983.

Since joining USAID as a Foreign Service Officer in 1988, the new USAID/Ghana Mission Director has served in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Sudan and Kenya.

She has also served as the Deputy Director in the East Asia Office of the Asia and the Near East Bureau at USAID headquarters in Washington D.C.

Ms Anderson has also worked as the programmes manager for Healthlink Worldwide, a UK-based non-governmental organization. She holds Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations from Colgate University and Master of Science in International Development Management from American University. 27 Aug. 09
