UTAG meet to prevent closure of universities

University lecturers across the country are meeting to possibly call off their strike.

They have been agitating over nonpayment of their book and research allowances for the past 3-weeks.

Several meetings have taken place between the lecturers and vice chancellors to resolve the matter.

President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana, Dr Anthony Simons, in an interview with XYZ News said a proposal is being put before the lecturers to inform their next line of action.

Meanwhile, the vice chancellors of the various universities have assured students that the institutions won’t be closed down as stipulated in their statutes.

Per the statutes of these universities, the academic calendar ought to be dissolved after 21 continuous days of academic dormancy.

Today marks exactly 21 days since the universities reopened.

But Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, has reiterated the resolve of the various vice chancellors to keep the schools running.
