Unemployed appears in court for allegedly possessing narcotic drugs

A 24-year-old unemployed allegedly found with six parcels of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis, on Friday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Bright Prince Salia, the accused, was arrested during a snap check at the Asutsuare Junction by personnel of the Highway Patrol Unit.

He pleaded not guilty to possessing narcotics drug without lawful authority and was remanded into Police custody to re-appear on June 26.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Peter Sakyi, prosecuting said, on June 5, this year, personnel of the Highway Patrol Unit on their routine patrol duty on the Accra – Ho road at Asutsuare Junction, made a snap check on vehicles plying the road.

He said a Toyota Hiace commercial vehicle with registration No. GR 6607-10 was stopped and Salia, a passenger on board was found with six cello-taped parcels of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis and quantity of small leaves in his luggage.

DSP Sakyi said the accused admitted ownership of the six parcels and in his caution statement indicated that he was sent by one Ebenezer to collect the stuff at Akodiem near Hohoe from a friend.

He said efforts were being made to arrest the other accomplices.

Meanwhile, the exhibits have been forwarded to the Forensic Crime Laboratory for examination.**
