Unemployed jailed 18 months for stealing ECG cables

Akim Oda (E/R), April 25, GNA- The Akim Oda Magistrate's court, presided over by Mr Albert Annor, has sentenced Salahu Abusalem, unemployed, to 18 months imprisonment in hard labour for stealing electric cables belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Abusalem pleaded guilty to stealing and the judge convicted and sentenced him accordingly.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector Kwaku Appiah said the complainant is the leader of the Divisional Police patrol team based in Akim Oda in the Birim Central Municipality, while the accused is unemployed and also lives in the same town.

Inspector Appiah said on April 23, this year, a police patrol team were tipped that a passenger on board an Akim Oda-Accra bound Benz bus was carrying a bag suspected to contain some stolen items. He said based upon the information the vehicle was intercepted and a search conducted on the bus revealed a black bag containing copper wires.

The accused claimed ownership and when interrogated he admitted stealing the cables with one Nana Yaw. Meanwhile, the police had mounted a search for Abusalem's accomplice.
