A Kumasi Circuit Court has sentenced an unemployed man to 10 years imprisonment in hard labour for possessing 30 wraps of Indian hemp (Wee) without lawful authority.

Kwabena Atta, alias “Leleele” pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Police Chief Superintendent Moses Atibillah told the Court presided over by Justice Emmanuel Amoh-Yartey that at about 1630 hours on September 26, 2012, personnel from the Drug Enforcement Unit upon a tip-off, went to Adum in Kumasi to arrest Atta who was then sitting in front of his house.

The team found a yellow plastic bag containing the 30 wraps of the substance also known as “wee” under the chair Atta was seated on.

He admitted ownership of the wraps and mentioned one “Red” as his source of supply.

Two days later, he led the police to the Kumasi Abattoir area where he claimed the said “Red” was staying, but he could not be found.

The exhibit was sent to the Police Forensic Laboratory in Accra for examination, the substance tested to be an Indian hemp weighing 115.58 grammes.
