Nelson Blay Nokotey was a level 300 top-up journalism student
A student of the Institute of Journalism of the University of Media, Arts and Communications (UniMAC) has tragically died after being knocked down by an unregistered vehicle on the N1 Highway.
Nelson Blay Nokotey, a Level 300 Top-Up Journalism student, was struck on Monday, January 19, 2026, at the Dzorwulu traffic light intersection while attempting to cross the road after visiting campus.
Eyewitnesses report that the driver initially feigned concern but later fled the scene, leaving Nelson’s body, which was later discovered by a police patrol team around Korle Bu.

In a statement released by the Public Affairs Directorate, UniMAC described the incident as “a painful loss that has left the school community in deep mourning and disbelief.”
The statement added, “Management, on behalf of the Governing Council, faculty, staff, and students, extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones of the late Nelson Blay Nokotey. Nelson was a valued and promising member of the UniMAC family, and his untimely passing is a painful loss to the University and the nation at large.”
Meanwhile, UniMAC has confirmed that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eric Opoku Mensah, met formally with Nelson’s family and also engaged both the Students’ Representative Council and the wider student body to share in their grief and offer support.
The University added that it is working closely with the Police Service to identify and apprehend the driver suspected to be responsible for the student’s untimely death.
“The VC indicated that University through its representatives (The Dean of Students Affairs and the Chief Security Officer) is working closely with the Ghana Police Service to support ongoing investigations aimed at identifying, apprehending, and prosecuting the perpetrator responsible for this criminal incident, in strict accordance with the law,” it stated.
The University also announced plans to engage state and municipal authorities, including transport, road safety, and local government agencies, to review and implement enhanced safety measures in and around the South Legon community.
“Beyond the immediate response, Management has re-engaged relevant state and municipal agencies, including security services, transport and road safety authorities, and local government institutions, to review and implement enhanced road safety measures aimed at protecting students, staff, and residents particularly within and around the South Legon community.

“These actions are aimed at preventing future loss of life and ensuring that students and residents can live, move, and learn in safety,” it assured.
