The National Youth Authority (NYA) branch of the Public Services Workers Union of the Trade Union Congress has called for the reconstitution of the Board of Trustee of the NYA.

The union suggested inclusion of personalities with wide range of experience on youth development and would not depend on state resources alone but could mobilize other resources from the private sector and third parties for the development of the NYA.

The union also called for the establishment of youth desks in all ministries, departments and state agencies as well as the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies with functional relationship with the NYA.

This was contained in a statement by the union and signed by the chairman, Mr Stephen Mensah-Etsibah and the Secretary, Mr Samuel Afari-Agyiri a copy of which was made available to the Ghana News Agency.

It said it was improper to place the NYA under the Ministry of Youth and sports where over the years all the resources of the Ministry had been skewed towards sports, particularly football leaving almost nothing to support the NYA.

The union expressed concern about the neglect of the 11 youth leadership and skills training institutions under the NYA and also the lack of space for staff of the authority in the 72 district offices of the NYA out of the existing 216 district assemblies.

The statement commended the government for the establishment of the Youth Enterprise Support Fund, the Youth Employment Agency, the promulgation of the National Youth Policy and the launching of the National Youth Policy Implementation Plan.
